Texas C.H.L. Concealed Hand Gun License

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the

people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." (2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution.)

Approved curriculum required by The Texas Department of Public Safety-
Concealed Handgun Licensing Division to certify a private citizen as having completed a course of study to apply for license to carry a "Concealed Handgun" legally in Texas

Obtaining a permit to carry concealed in the State of Texas requires a 10 hour Concealed Handgun License Certification Course which is outlined by the State Department of Public Safety and covers the use of force, gun safety, gun storage, dispute resolution and Texas laws regarding use of force as a defense and licensing requirements.

You can start your application for a concealed handgun license online athttps://www.texasonline.state.tx.us/txapp/txdps/chl/. We suggest that you come to class so you understand what you are stating on the application. However, you can go online and complete the application and then come to class. Whichever you decide to do, you will have to apply online to get a number so you can set up your appointment for fingerprints with L1 solutions. As of March 1, 2011, DPS will no longer accept rolled fingerprints. They must be completed by L1 Solutions and you must make an appointment with them giving them a number assigned by DPS so it will tie into your application.

• If you have taken the classroom training on your third renewal then the fourth time renewing will be allowed without the classroom training.

Complete the online renewal application:

When you complete payment to the Department of Public Safety online, it will give you a receipt and notice letter. You must print out the receipt/notice/checklist that appears on the screen telling you any additional documents/paperwork based on any special conditions - place of birth; residence address; etc. - that needs be completed and returned to the Department. It will have a barcode and must be included with the additional items needed by DPS.

Be sure you understand what is being asked in the application as you are verifying the information when you complete the process. You will not receive an application packet in the mail.

You just set up a class date and come to class with identification.

When you complete the class, you will be issued a CHL 100 showing that you have passed both the classroom and range qualification. You will then mail the required documentation to the Department of Public Safety for them to process the background checks and issue your renewal license.
